Abstract

A prospective study was initiated aimed to increase positive yield of organisms in the CSF in meningitides through proper adherence to standard laboratory technique and a correct clinical approach. A total of 36 cases were seen - bacterial (12), TB (15), cryptococcal (9). The organism was identified in 75 of those diagnosed as bacterial meningitis. In those labeled as TB meningitis, no organism was seen by smear but 13 were positive by culture. All cases of cryptococal meningitis were etiologically established in 78 by smear and 100 by culture.
