Clindamycin activity against plasmodium falciparum gametocytes.

The emergence and spread of drug-resistant malaria on a global scale stimulated research on alternative drugs in the past two decades. One of these is clindamycin (7-chloro-7-deoxylincomycin), an antibiotic shown to have parasiticidal effects on the asexual stages of plasmodium falciparum, hence, the clinical cure of malaria. The present study aimed to test further the possible effect of the drug on gametocytes on P. falciparum. Thus, gametocytes exposed in vitro for 72 hours to 100 ug/ml clindamycin exhibited morphological changes resulting in impaired sporogonous development in experimentally infected mosquitoes. The probable mode of action appeared to be directed mainly against immature gametocytes. Gametocytes of 15 clindamycin-treated patients likewise showed progressive distortion within 7 days.
